The Lincoln County Schools recognizes that good nutrition and regular physical activity affect the health and well-being of the county's students.  Furthermore, research suggests that there is a positive correlation between a student's health and well-being and his/her ability to learn.  Moreover, schools can play an important role in the developmental process by which students establish their health and nutrition habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks, supporting the development  of good eating habits, and by promoting increased physical activity both in and out of school.

The Board, however, believes this effort to support the students' development of healthy behaviors and habits with regard to eating and exercise cannot be accomplished by the schools alone.  It will be necessary for not only the staff, but also parents and the public at large to be involved in a community-wide effort to promote, support, and model such healthy behaviors and habits.

Free Meals for Kids

Lincoln County Schools Provide Meals To Students At No Cost

Students in Lincoln County Schools will have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.  The county is participating in a program called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).

The CEP was enacted as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and provides universal meal service to children in high poverty areas.  This is the fourth year for the option.  The CEP is an alternative to collecting, approving and verifying household eligibility applications for free and reduced price eligible students in high poverty Local Education Agencies.  If at least 40 percent of a school's students are directly certified for free meal benefits, the entire school qualifies for the option.

Lincoln County will have all 8 schools participate in the CEP.  This will include all students at Harts PK-8, Ranger PK-5, West Hamlin PK-5, Hamlin PK-8, Duval PK-8, Midway PK-5, Guyan Valley Middle School and Lincoln County High School.  The program allows the school system to feed nearly 3600 students each day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released data reporting high levels of food insecurity and hunger across the country.  In West Virginia, over 14 percent of residents live in food insecure households and more than 100,000 children live below the poverty line.

Hamlin PK-8 School Garden
Our Garden From Seed to Harvest
Administrators at Hamlin PK-8 incorporated a new kind of learning during the 2015-2016 school year with a program designed to teach students career and technical skills that will aid in the transition to the Career and Technical Program at Lincoln County High School. Administrators envisioned introducing these hands on applications as a pilot program for seventh and eighth graders.  Students expanded their knowledge in agriculture, home economics, and building construction as part of this program.  Classes worked collaboratively, developing different aspects of the project, with the end result being a school garden as well as a school walking trail.   The construction team, led by Mr. Joey Ferguson, built the walking trail for students to enjoy and made raised beds for the vegetable gardens.  They have further plans to build low tunnels and add additional growing screens for the garden.  Science students, under the supervision of Ms. Tauna Davis, planted, cared for,  and harvested an array of fresh crops, including radishes, kale, and turnips.  The project did not end there.  Mrs. Leah Hager's class learned to prepare and cook the fresh vegetables as part of their studies in Home Economics.  The school food service staff offered a portion of the fresh vegetables on their salad bar as  part of the school lunch.  Assistant principal, Chastidy Graham, says "The program thus far has been a huge success!"  Hamlin PK-8 has plans to continue this farm to table program in an effort to educate and promote healthy living among students and their families.

Students in Lincoln County Schools took part in a countywide Herb Growing event.   The children had a great time participating and growing their herb gardens.
